Local privilege escalation via stale packet pointer write
Published May 5, 2025 · Updated Aug 5, 2026
Use-after-free in the Linux kernel BPF verifier allows local users to escalate privileges via a crafted eBPF program. The verifier fails to propagate changes_pkt_data through global subprogram calls, so a helper can invalidate packet data while the caller retains a stale writable pointer. Loading and attaching the program requires delegated CAP_BPF and CAP_NET_ADMIN; exploitation can disclose or corrupt kernel heap memory, trigger a panic, or elevate privileges.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
