System crash via unchecked IPMB device name allocation
Published Mar 6, 2025 · Updated May 12, 2026
NULL-pointer dereference in affected Linux kernel releases starting at 5.3 allows local users to crash the system during IPMB driver setup. The ipmb_probe function passes a NULL miscdev.name to misc_register when devm_kasprintf cannot allocate the IPMB device name. The IPMB driver must be probed while memory allocation fails; successful triggering interrupts the host without reported data exposure or modification.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
