CVE-2024-5803

Local privilege escalation via COM hijacking

Published Oct 3, 2024 · Updated Oct 3, 2024

Privilege escalation in AVG AntiVirus before 24.1 allows local users to gain elevated privileges through COM hijacking in AVGUI.exe. AVGUI.exe checks a COM component and later uses it across a TOCTOU window, allowing the checked component to be replaced before use. Exploitation requires low privileges, user interaction, disabled self-protection, and winning the race; successful use grants elevated access.
