CVE-2024-58017

Local service interruption via signed shift overflow

Published Feb 27, 2025 · Updated May 23, 2026

Integer overflow in Linux kernel printk on affected releases allows local users to interrupt service through a signed 32-bit shift. The LOG_BUF_LEN_MAX definition evaluates 1 << 31 as a signed int in kernel/printk/printk.c, invoking undefined behavior instead of an unsigned shift. Exploitation requires local low-privileged access and a 32-bit build; the published impact is limited to availability, with no confidentiality or integrity effect.
