Local service interruption via sleep-capable die lock
Published Jan 21, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026
Concurrency flaw in the Linux kernel allows local users to interrupt service by triggering a RISC-V exception on PREEMPT_RT. The RISC-V die() path acquires a sleep-capable spinlock while running in an exception handler, where sleeping is invalid. Exposure requires a RISC-V kernel built with PREEMPT_RT and a local user able to reach an exception path; the published impact is availability loss.
