Local denial of service via file-handle assertion
Published Jan 19, 2025 · Updated Sep 8, 2026
Reachable assertions in Linux kernel file-handle encoding allow local users to interrupt service through a failed encode_fh operation. Several exportfs_encode_fh and exportfs_encode_fid callers apply WARN_ON when a filesystem encode_fh method returns an ordinary failure instead of propagating that failure. The reachable paths require local low-privileged access and a filesystem condition that makes encoding fail; triggering the assertion causes kernel availability loss.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
