Guest crash via receive-fragment buffer overflow
Published Jan 11, 2025 · Updated Aug 5, 2026
Buffer overflow in the Linux kernel virtio-net receive path allows local users to crash a guest during receive-buffer refills. The allocation path reserves 16 bytes for virtnet_rq_dma at the start of a new one-page fragment but can then size the receive buffer past PAGE_SIZE. The condition is reliably reachable when net.core.high_order_alloc_disable is 1, and sustained transfers can crash the guest or cause transfer failures.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
