Authenticated service crash via unchecked DHCP field
Published Jan 21, 2025 · Updated Jan 22, 2025
Stack buffer overflow in Linksys E8450 firmware 1.2.00.360516 allows remote authenticated users to crash portal.cgi via a crafted DHCP field. The portal.cgi JSON handler passes the attacker-controlled dhcpstart_ip value to strcpy, copying it into a fixed-size stack buffer without checking its length. Access to the router management interface and valid authentication are required from an adjacent network; the published proof of concept establishes a crash, not code execution.
