Unauthenticated AMF crash via stale authentication response
Published Feb 3, 2025 · Updated Mar 22, 2025
Denial of service in Open5GS AMF 2.7.2 allows remote attackers to crash the process via repeated UE registration requests. The gmm_state_exception() function aborts when a delayed Nausf_UEAuthentication_Authenticate response for a released UE context reaches an unhandled NAUSF state. No authentication is required, but exploitation depends on timing repeated registrations so an older AUSF response arrives after the prior context is released.
