CVE-2024-56737Network attack vector

Memory corruption via unbounded HFS volume-name copy

Published Dec 29, 2024 · Updated Dec 31, 2024

Heap-based buffer overflow in GNU GRUB 2.12 and earlier allows context-dependent attackers to corrupt memory via a crafted HFS volume. The grub_hfs_mount function in grub-core/fs/hfs.c copies sblock.volname into the fixed-size key.str buffer with grub_strcpy without validating or bounding its length. Reaching the flaw requires GRUB to mount attacker-controlled HFS data; consequences beyond the out-of-bounds write are not publicly documented.
