System panic via concurrent IPv6 route churn
Published Dec 28, 2024 · Updated Sep 8, 2026
Denial of service in Linux IPv6 routing allows local users to panic a system through concurrent route churn and heavy IPv6 traffic. fib6_select_path traverses a circular sibling list without RCU protection while another core can delete and self-link a node, leaving traversal in an infinite loop. Exploitation requires control of route updates and sustained IPv6 traffic; the watchdog then converts the soft lockup into a system panic.
