CVE-2024-56672

Kernel use-after-free via stale blkcg parent access

Published Dec 27, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Use-after-free in Linux kernel blk-cgroup code from 5.7 allows local users to trigger an unsafe read during cgroup teardown. blkcg_unpin_online() destroys a block-cgroup object before obtaining its parent pointer, then dereferences the potentially freed object while walking the hierarchy. Triggering the race requires indirect freeing across RCU grace periods and work-item execution; upstream reproduction required an injected delay, so demonstrated impact is limited to unsafe kernel-memory access.
