Kernel memory corruption via sockmap replacement race
Published Dec 27, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026
Use-after-free in Linux kernel BPF sockmaps allows local users to corrupt kernel memory through concurrent socket replacement and closure. The __sock_map_delete() path decrements the replacement socket's reference after the original socket's close path races with a map update, leaving the map entry dangling. Triggering the flaw requires access to the bpf() system call and concurrent control of the narrow race; observed results include reference-count warnings and a KASAN-detected write in sock_map_free().
