Denial of service via incorrect ICMP route attachment
Published Dec 27, 2024 · Updated Jun 1, 2026
Denial of service in the Linux kernel allows local users to trigger an ip_rt_bug warning through crafted XFRM ICMP routing. The icmp_route_lookup() path creates an input route during XFRM relookup and attaches a route whose output handler is ip_rt_bug to a destination-unreachable packet. Triggering the path requires low-privileged local access, XFRM, and an ARP link failure; the warning disrupts availability without exposing or modifying data.
