CVE-2024-56565

Kernel panic via zero-sector F2FS discard

Published Dec 27, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026

Denial of service in the Linux kernel's F2FS code allows local users to trigger a kernel panic through an LVM snapshot. In __submit_discard_cmd(), F2FS passes a zero nr_sects value to __blkdev_issue_discard() after a snapshot zeros the device's discard_max_bytes, causing a NULL bio return to be dereferenced. Exploitation requires local low-privileged access, an F2FS filesystem on an LVM logical volume, pending discards, and snapshot creation; success crashes the host.
