Data disclosure via claimed-type decoder confusion
Published Jan 16, 2025 · Updated Feb 12, 2025
Decoder confusion in Matrix Media Repo before 1.3.8 allows remote authenticated users to disclose data through crafted thumbnail requests. The thumbnailing path trusts a file's claimed SVG, JPEGXL, or MP4 type, allowing ImageMagick or ffmpeg to dispatch its content to another decoder. Exposure requires a disabled-by-default thumbnailer and a decoder capable of processing the disguised format; affected ImageMagick setups can invoke Ghostscript.
