Privilege escalation via symlink-following file recovery
Published Jan 10, 2025 · Updated Jan 14, 2025
Insecure permissions in Hasleo Backup Suite Free 4.9.4 and earlier allow local users to write files with administrative privileges. During file recovery, the restore service follows a low-privileged user's symbolic link and creates or overwrites the link target with administrative rights. A low-privileged Windows account can redirect a restored executable into the system-wide Startup folder, causing code execution with administrative access at the next sign-in.
