Authenticated root code execution via DNS parameter overflow
Published Jan 9, 2025 · Updated Jul 5, 2026
Stack buffer overflow in TP-Link TL-WR940N firmware 3.16.9 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to execute code as root. The IPv6 6to4 tunnel handler at /userRpm/Wan6to4TunnelCfgRpm.htm copies an overlong dnsserver1 or dnsserver2 value without a size check, overwriting stack control data. An authenticated web-management session from the adjacent network is required; successful exploitation runs attacker-supplied code with the router's root privileges.
