Authenticated root command execution via unsanitized hostname
Published Mar 31, 2025 · Updated Apr 2, 2025
Command injection in NETGEAR WNR854T firmware 1.5.2 allows remote authenticated users to execute root commands through wan_hostname. /bin/sysinit inserts the stored wan_hostname value into a netbios shell command with sprintf and later passes the result to system(). Access to the authenticated post.cgi route is required; the injected NVRAM value persists and executes at each reboot with root privileges.
