Service interruption via expanding Markdown payload
Published Aug 8, 2024 · Updated Aug 29, 2024
Resource exhaustion in GitLab CE/EE affected releases allows remote authenticated users to interrupt service through crafted Markdown. The Banzai Markdown pipeline applies filters that can expand attacker-controlled input without a sufficient complexity bound, driving CPU threads to 100%. Low-privileged authenticated access and a Markdown-rendering path are required; the documented impact is availability loss only.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
- Affected versionversion=1 <17.0.6
- Affected versionversion=17.1 <17.1.4

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
