CVE-2024-54159

Local service interruption via temporary-file symlink

Published Nov 29, 2024 · Updated Dec 3, 2024

Symlink following in stalld 1.19.7 and earlier allows local users to overwrite files and interrupt service through /tmp/rtthrottle. The root-run throttlectl.sh script stores scheduling values at that fixed path, follows an attacker-created link, and writes to its target. Exploitation requires a service start or restart, and the symlink path additionally requires the Linux protected_symlinks control to be disabled.
