CVE-2024-53845Network attack vector

Provisioning-data disclosure via reused zero AES IV

Published Dec 11, 2024 · Updated Dec 12, 2024

Information disclosure in ESPTouch v2 in Espressif Systems ESP-IDF allows remote attackers to infer Wi-Fi provisioning data. The ESP Wi-Fi component initializes the AES/CBC IV to zero and reuses it for the product lifetime, making repeated plaintext produce deterministic ciphertext. Exposure requires ESPTouch v2 with AES enabled and observation of provisioning broadcasts; the reported consequence is data leakage, not modification or interruption.
