System crash via discovery-NQN heap overflow
Published Jan 15, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026
Heap buffer overflow in Linux allows local users to crash affected kernels via an NVMe target discovery-NQN update. The nvmet_root_discovery_nqn_store function clears NVMF_NQN_FIELD_LEN bytes in a heap string allocated only to the prior NQN length, writing beyond that allocation before copying the replacement. Reachability requires permission to write the NVMe target discovery_nqn configfs attribute; the documented impact is a local system crash without data disclosure or modification.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
