Kernel crash via incorrect symbol_put argument
Published Dec 27, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026
NULL pointer dereference in Linux kernel 5.17 and later affected branches allows local users to trigger a kernel BUG. In utf8_load(), the unsupported-version error path passes the loaded utf8_data_table pointer to symbol_put(), which expects the symbol's unique name, causing __symbol_put() to fail. A user must locally request an unsupported UTF-8 version; successful exploitation interrupts the running system without reported data disclosure or modification.
