Kernel memory corruption via aborted NFS opens
Published Dec 27, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026
Use-after-free in the Linux NFSv4.0 client allows local users to corrupt kernel memory through concurrent aborted file opens. nfs4_opendata_free() releases a sequence ID through a pointer to another thread's freed rpc_task when RPC cancellation races nfs_wait_on_sequence(). An unprivileged account with access to an NFSv4.0 mount can repeatedly trigger the race, causing a kernel panic or enabling kernel-memory disclosure and control-flow hijacking.
