CVE-2024-53172

Kernel warning via duplicate UBI slab cache names

Published Dec 27, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026

Improper resource naming in affected Linux kernel releases allows local users to trigger a kernel warning during UBI fastmap attachment. The UBI attachment path can call alloc_ai() twice with the same ubi_aeb_slab_cache name, causing __kmem_cache_create_args() to detect the duplicate. Triggering requires a fastmap-based UBI device and a kernel built with CONFIG_DEBUG_VM; the published reproducer reports a warning, not a crash or data loss.
