Local kernel memory corruption via undersized JPEG segments
Published Nov 19, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026
Buffer overflow in affected Linux kernel branches from 4.4 allows local users to corrupt kernel memory through malformed JPEG segment lengths. The s5p_jpeg_parse_hdr path subtracts two from each 16-bit segment length without rejecting values below two, producing negative lengths that drive out-of-bounds buffer handling. Exploitation requires local access to an s5p-jpeg V4L2 device and crafted JPEG input, and the resulting corruption can compromise kernel confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
