CVE-2024-5300

Password-hash disclosure via overpermissive AppArmor socket rules

Published Jul 21, 2026 · Updated Jul 21, 2026

Information disclosure in Canonical snapd before 2.76.1 allows local users controlling a confined root process to read host password hashes. The nss-systemd abstraction permits confined root processes to open systemd-userdbd Varlink sockets, which return complete records from /etc/shadow. Exploitation requires root code inside a strictly confined snap and an installed, operational systemd-userdbd service, which standard Ubuntu deployments omit by default.
