Node crash via unbounded WKT geometry recursion
Published Apr 8, 2025 · Updated Apr 8, 2025
Stack exhaustion in Elastic Elasticsearch 7.17.0 through 7.17.23 and 8.0 through 8.15.0 allows remote authenticated users to crash a node. WellKnownText.parseGeometry recursively parses nested GeometryCollection input without enforcing a maximum depth, eventually overflowing the Java stack. Reaching the parser requires high cluster privileges; successful exploitation interrupts the affected node without reported data disclosure or modification.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
- Affected versionversion=7.17.0 <=7.17.23
