Firmware interruption via unbounded variable-name comparison
Published May 15, 2025 · Updated May 19, 2025
Buffer over-read in Insyde InsydeH2O VariableRuntimeDxe allows local users with high privileges to interrupt firmware execution through an SMM callback. The SmmUpdateVariablePropertySmi callback compares a variable name with StrCmp without a length-bounded comparison, so the operation can read beyond the name buffer. Vendor assessment requires local high privileges and bounds the effect to availability; the advisory does not identify whether interruption takes the form of a crash, hang, or reboot.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

Published CVSS scores
CVSS describes severity. EPSS estimates exploitation probability.
Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
Public exploit references
No public exploit references are available in this record.
Labels summarize the accepted research assessment. They do not indicate a test against your environment.
