Authenticated arbitrary file write via path traversal
Published Nov 18, 2024 · Updated Nov 18, 2024
Path traversal in MarkUs before 2.4.8 allows remote authenticated users to write arbitrary server files via a crafted submission path. The SubmissionsController update_files method joins an untrusted path to the assignment repository without enforcing containment, and RepositoryHelper ultimately writes the supplied file. A student or instructor account with web-submission access can overwrite server-writable paths; code placed in a Rails initializer executes after restart.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
