Odometer increase via unauthenticated CAN identifier fuzzing
Published Nov 22, 2024 · Updated Jan 13, 2025
Incorrect access control in the KIA Seltos instrument cluster v1.0 allows physically proximate attackers to increase odometer readings via CAN. Fuzzing CAN identifier 0x386 changes the displayed speed and increments the odometer, while UDS Read Data by Identifier 0x22 exposes the resulting value at DID 0x0080 in nonvolatile memory. KIA disputes the claim because the bus is not externally exposed, the test used an isolated cluster rather than a complete vehicle, and the behavior follows UDS; only increases were observed.
