SYSTEM code execution via unsafe file rename
Published Nov 18, 2024 · Updated Nov 19, 2024
Insecure file handling in Micro-Star International MSI Center Pro 2.1.37.0 allows local users to execute code as SYSTEM. MSI.CentralServer.exe, running as SYSTEM, renames attacker-controlled Device_DeviceID.dat.bak without blocking reparse-point redirection. A standard local account can chain directory junctions and symbolic links to place a DLL in a privileged location for SYSTEM execution.
