Process crash via unstarted parser suspension
Published Oct 27, 2024 · Updated Apr 30, 2025
Denial of service in Expat Project libexpat before 2.6.4 allows remote attackers to crash a consuming process via parser API misuse. XML_StopParser accepts a stop or suspend request while the parser is initialized but unstarted, leaving XML_ResumeParser to reach normal_updatePosition and dereference a null input pointer. Exploitation requires a consuming application to expose that API-state sequence; the demonstrated consequence is termination of the affected process, not data access or modification.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
