Root privilege escalation via tampered backup restore

Published Nov 26, 2024 · Updated Nov 26, 2024

CWE-15 in Advantech EKI-6333 access-point firmware allows remote authenticated users to gain root via a tampered backup. The restore function accepts attacker-controlled system settings from a configuration archive without preserving the restricted OpenWrt privilege boundary. Administrative access and a configuration restore are required on EKI-6333AC-2G and -2GD 1.6.3 and earlier or -1GPO 1.2.1 and earlier; exploitation grants root capabilities.
