Credential theft via unsanitized terminal prompts
Published Jan 14, 2025 · Updated Nov 3, 2025
Improper output encoding in Git allows remote attackers to steal credentials through terminal prompts triggered by crafted URLs. credential_ask_one formatted already-decoded username and host data without encoding control sequences before displaying it in the terminal. Exploitation requires an interactive prompt without a credential helper and a user who opens an attacker-controlled URL and enters a secret for the disguised host.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
