CVE-2024-50336Network attack vector

Authenticated homeserver requests via MXC path traversal

Published Nov 12, 2024 · Updated Nov 3, 2025

Client-side path traversal in matrix-js-sdk before 34.11.1 allows remote authenticated users to issue arbitrary homeserver GET requests. The SDK accepts crafted MXC server-name and media-id components without client-side validation and uses them to construct authenticated media request paths. A malicious Matrix room member must supply the MXC URI to an affected client; the resulting request uses the client's homeserver credentials and can modify data reachable by GET.
