Local kernel corruption via oversized NTFS decompression
Published Nov 9, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026
Out-of-bounds access in Linux kernel NTFS3 allows local users to corrupt kernel state by processing a malformed compressed NTFS chunk. The decompress_chunk function can advance output beyond LZNT_CHUNK_SIZE and then increment an index past s_max_off without rejecting the oversized result. Exploitation requires the malformed chunk to reach NTFS3 locally and can alter kernel state or interrupt the host.
