CVE-2024-50225

System crash via split-bio error propagation race

Published Nov 9, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

NULL pointer dereference in Linux 6.3 through 6.11.6 allows local users to crash or hang systems through split Btrfs bio errors. btrfs_bbio_propagate_error() reads an unset original-bio context when a split bio completes too quickly and can also overwrite or lose error status before upper layers receive it. Reachability requires writes to a mounted Btrfs filesystem; the published reproducer additionally uses a zoned device with raid-stripe-tree, RAID0 data, and RAID1 metadata.
