Kernel crash via missing altmode parent reference
Published Nov 7, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026
Use-after-free in USB Type-C altmode handling in Linux allows local users to crash the kernel during device release. typec_altmode_release dereferences its parent device after registration fails to retain a parent reference, allowing the parent to be freed first. The trigger requires local access and Type-C altmode teardown; Siemens lists all SIMATIC S7-1500 TM MFP GNU/Linux subsystem versions as affected.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
