Kernel crash via duplicate BNEP protocol cleanup
Published Nov 7, 2024 · Updated May 12, 2026
Incomplete cleanup in the Linux kernel BNEP module allows local users to crash the kernel during failed initialization and module removal. bnep_init ignores a bnep_sock_init failure after that function releases socket resources, so bnep_sock_cleanup later unregisters the same protocol state and reaches wild memory in proto_unregister. Reachability requires bnep_sock_init to fail and the BNEP module to be removed; the published trace shows rmmod running as UID 0.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
