Local system crash via unreferenced thermal zone
Published Oct 21, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026
Use-after-free in Linux kernel 5.9 through 6.11.3 and 6.12-rc1 through rc2 allows local users to crash via thermal netlink requests. thermal_zone_get_by_id() returns a zone pointer without taking a device reference, allowing concurrent unregister to free it before netlink callers finish. Exploitation requires low-privileged local access and concurrent zone removal, and the documented consequence is limited to availability.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
