System halt via oversized identity mappings
Published Oct 21, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026
Improper identity mapping in the Linux kernel allows local users to halt UV systems through processor speculation into BIOS-reserved regions. ident_pud_init() maps a full 1 GB page for a partial request as small as 4 KB, extending the identity map into addresses the BIOS marked reserved. Exploitation requires local low-privileged access and an affected x86 UV system; the bounded consequence is a system halt.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
