CVE-2024-49973

Kernel memory corruption via undersized tally buffer

Published Oct 21, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Out-of-bounds DMA write in r8169 on affected Linux releases starting at 5.4 allows local users to corrupt kernel memory via RTL8125 counter dumps. The driver allocates a tally buffer sized for older chips, but RTL8125 hardware writes 128 additional counter bytes past that allocation during a dump. An unprivileged statistics read triggers the dump on RTL8125 systems; Siemens lists all versions of its SIMATIC S7-1500 TM MFP GNU/Linux subsystem as affected.
