CVE-2024-49962

Local kernel crash via unchecked allocation failure

Published Oct 21, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026

NULL pointer dereference in affected Linux kernel releases beginning with 4.4 allows local users to crash the kernel through the ACPICA debugger. The acpi_db_convert_to_package function passes an unchecked ACPI_ALLOCATE_ZEROED result into recursive package conversion, where a failed allocation leaves elements null for later dereference. Reachability requires the ACPICA debugger path and an allocation failure; the bounded consequence is a kernel crash rather than data access or modification.
