CVE-2024-49952

Kernel panic via unsynchronized netfilter recursion guard

Published Oct 21, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Race condition in Linux netfilter allows local users to trigger a kernel panic by exercising an nftables dup rule. The nf_dup_ipv4 and nf_dup_ipv6 paths write the per-CPU nf_skb_duplicated recursion guard without disabling soft interrupts, allowing concurrent contexts to corrupt the guard. Reachability requires a local account able to create user and network namespaces; successful exploitation can exhaust the kernel stack and crash the host.
