CVE-2024-49882

Local kernel compromise via ext4 buffer double-release

Published Oct 21, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Use-after-free in the ext4 extent-split path in Linux allows local users to compromise the kernel through ordinary file operations. ext4_ext_try_to_merge_up() releases path[1].p_bh without clearing the pointer, so later error cleanup releases the same buffer again and leaves live buffer metadata available for reuse. An unprivileged account needs write access to a file on a mounted ext4 filesystem; successful exploitation enables kernel-memory disclosure, metadata corruption, control-flow hijacking, or a full system crash.
