CVE-2024-49880

Kernel crash via off-by-one resize group calculation

Published Oct 21, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026

An off-by-one error in Linux 6.8 through 6.10.13 and 6.11 through 6.11.2 ext4 resizing allows local users to trigger a kernel BUG. alloc_flex_gd() adds one while adjusting resize_bg, allowing flex_gd->resize_bg to exceed flexbg_size before ext4_resize_fs() reaches its bounds assertion. Exploitation requires local filesystem-resize privileges and crafted ext4 geometry; the result interrupts the resize and crashes hosts configured to panic on a kernel oops.
