CVE-2024-49766Network attack vector

Unintended data access via unchecked Windows UNC paths

Published Oct 25, 2024 · Updated Jan 31, 2025

Path traversal in Pallets Werkzeug before 3.0.6 allows remote attackers to access unintended data through UNC path input on Windows. The safe_join function trusts os.path.isabs to reject absolute paths, but Python before 3.11 does not recognize paths beginning with two forward slashes as absolute on Windows. Exploitation requires an application to pass attacker-controlled paths to safe_join; non-Windows systems and Python 3.11 or later are unaffected.
