Local privilege escalation via Parcel buffer growth
Published Jan 21, 2025 · Updated Feb 18, 2025
Out-of-bounds write in Android 12 through 15 allows local users to elevate privileges through a malformed Binder Parcel. Parcel::growData accepted a data position beyond the current data size and grew the buffer from the smaller size, leaving later writes outside the allocation. A low-privileged local process can trigger the faulty Binder Parcel growth without user interaction and gain higher privileges.
